On my travels as an external examiner of secondary PGCE RE courses I very occasionally get responses from trainees (and sometimes their mentors) that they can’t see the point of having to write masters-level assignments when time and capacity are short. One can understand the pressure they are under but an ability to think deeply and theoretically makes the kind of reflective teacher who is capable of developing a vision for their subject and, in the best cases, thinking creatively about their practice. Here Lois Vanstone illustrates clearly an original approach to teaching and learning in RE by bringing together her degree discipline of philosophy with the enthusiasm she has developed during her PGCE course for the study of religion.
