Every day we are ‘storied’. We all live by stories – indeed, our lives are stories – but for them to mean something we have to be inside them; otherwise they are merely words. When we achieve that synergy, we come close to appreciating what Anthony de Mello (1999) meant when he said, ‘You have yet to understand that the shortest distance between a human being and truth is a story.’ That is all well and good, but where does that leave us when the story we are telling to young children is a religious one, the stuff of faith and, for some people, truth indeed?
