Reviews

On these pages I regularly invite readers and colleagues to share their views about books they have enjoyed. Julie Grove has responded with a review of a book by Mark Oakley – theologian, poet, broadcaster, Dean of Chapel at St John’s College in Cambridge and former Canon Chancellor of St Paul’s Cathedral. I have indulged my love of poetry in my choice of Ann Wroe’s recently published Francis: A Life in Songs, a book that has engaged, delighted and intrigued me. I think it isthe first time that a poetry book has been reviewed here, which is surprising as so many poetic writings explore the spiritual dimension of human experience, allowing us to hear, see and feel the world in new ways. Oakley is a poet and, as Julie shows in her review, his book is richly illustrated with poetic references. Francis was also a poet, lover of troubadour songs, a musician and a dancer. There is a happy coincidence in our choice of books.Janet
