In an article for Professional REflection in REtoday, Jenny Berglund and Bill Gent suggested using ‘three Bs’ to think of the interconnected, overlapping dimensions of religious identity: believing, belonging and behaving.1 These Bs prompt us to move away from portrayals of Islam that focus on theology and beliefs, and towards learning about how Islam shapes the lives of Muslims. With the Commission on Religious Education report again emphasising the need to include the ‘lived experience of individuals and communities’ in RE,2 here we discuss the kinds of social scientific tools you can use in the classroom to explore what it means to be a Muslim in Britain today
